Wireless Technologies

CSIRO has a long and distinguished history in the field of radio systems with a commanding local and international reputation.

Our researchers are developing new technologies for wireless systems and creating innovative products and services utilising these new technologies.

Specifically our research focus is in the areas of communications, imaging, positioning and sensing, and supporting radioastronomy.

CSIRO proudly partners with the Australian Defence Force, satellite operators and large domestic and international companies to develop state-of-the-art wireless solutions.

We are also closely aligned with the Australia National Telescope Facility, providing technological solutions to deliver the next generation of radio telescopes.

The Laboratory’s specific areas of expertise include:

  • Networking Science – architecture, design and optimisation of wireless and fixed communication networks.
  • Antennas and Propagation – electromagnetic design and optimisation of the air interface and characterisation of the communications medium.
  • Communication Theory and Signal Processing – algorithms, protocols and coding for the optimal transmission and recovery of information in a communications system.
  • Microwave and mm-wave Techniques – design, simulation and characterisation of components and systems for operation at frequencies beyond 30 GHz.
