Global Innovation in ICTDr Alex Zelinsky - Director

Dr Alex Zelinsky

Alex Zelinsky is Director of the ICT Centre. Alex was named in The Bulletin Magazine’s annual Smart 100 list of influential Australians in 2003. He was also selected by the World Economic Forum as a Technology Pioneer for 2003 and 2004. Dr Zelinsky is available to comment on the Australian and global ICT landscape. He can also discuss the ICT Centre’s capabilities, research agenda, achievements, major business partnerships, and spin-off successes and opportunities.

Antennas and Radio Telescopes

Dr Ttrevor BirdDr Trevor Bird

Trevor Bird is the ICT Centre’s Chief Research Scientist and leader of the Electromagnetics and Antennas stream. Trevor’s expertise focuses on antennas and microwave systems for satellite communications, wireless and radio telescope systems. Dr Bird has guided development of CSIRO’s MultiBeam earth station antenna, instigated development of the novel Ka‑band transponder in the FedSat microsatellite and led the development of antennas for millimetre wave indoor wireless local area networks.

e-Health

Dr Laurie WilsonDr Laurie Wilson

Laurie Wilson plays a co-ordinating role across several research teams applying ICT to healthcare. While medical ultrasound is the field in which Dr Wilson’s personal research has made the greatest impact, Laurie and his colleagues have also made significant research contributions to developing personal monitoring systems, networked virtual reality surgical training, other forms of medical imaging and broadband telemedicine.

Information Security and Privacy

Dr David HansenDr David Hansen

David Hansen is a world leader in the fast growing field of bioinformatics, with a focus on the integration, management and analysis of vast biological data collections. David now leads the Health Data Integration™ (HDI™) research team at the e-Health Research Centre. The HDI™ project aims to make health data more available for research while preserving patient privacy. [The e-Health Research Centre, a $15 million joint venture between CSIRO and the Queensland Government.]

Internet Search Technology

Dr David HawkingDr David Hawking

David Hawking is a Principal Research Scientist and leader of the Enterprise Search team, based in Canberra. David and his team have created an enterprise search engine (Panoptic™) which is now in commercial use at over 45 sites including the ABC, Westpac, ASX and NineMSN. Dr Hawking’s expertise focuses on the areas of web search, search quality evaluation, test collections, search and searchability, distributed information retrieval, search using metadata and content, and enterprise search.

Language Technology and Human-Computer Interaction

Dr Cecile ParisDr Cécile Paris
Cécile Paris is the leader of the Information Engagement research project. Dr Paris is particularly interested in designing systems that can automatically provide the right information at the right time, thus combating information overload and assisting people with their information needs. The application domains for this work include electronic business applications, knowledge management, surveillance, the automatic generation of instructional text and documentation, tourism and virtual museums.

Multimedia

Dr Silvia PfeifferDr Silvia Pfeiffer

Silvia Pfeiffer co-ordinates Networked Media research in the ICT Centre which explores the future of media technologies using gigabit networks such as CeNTIE and 3G. Currently Dr Pfeiffer’s focus is on the creation of standards and technologies to enable Webs of audio and video to be browsed using the Annodex™ platform. Other interests include multimedia metadata standards, telepresence technology, audio-visual content extraction, and dynamic media scaling.

Robotics and Sensor Networks

Dr Peter CorkeDr Peter Corke

Peter Corke is a Senior Principal Research Scientist and leads the Autonomous Systems Laboratory. His research activities currently span machine vision, vision-based robot control, field robotics (with a focus on mining applications) and sensor networks for environmental monitoring. Dr Corke is an adjunct professor at the Australian National University and the University of Queensland, and is a member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Robotics Research.

Wireless Communication

Ms Oya SevimliMs Oya Sevimli

Oya Sevimli leads the ICT Centre’s Gigabit Wireless research project. Oya and her team have embarked on a new research program to yield a new generation of innovative wireless products. They are developing technologies for fibre quality wireless last mile solutions and extending their research in millimetre-wave technology to consumer base products. Her team has an extensive expertise in designing, building and testing of microwave and millimetre-wave communication systems and components.

Radiowave Propagation and Spectrum Management

Mrs Carol WilsonMrs Carol Wilson

Carol Wilson leads the propagation and spectrum research within the ICT Centre. Her team have expertise in propagation for satellite, land-mobile, broadcasting, point-to-point and indoor wireless systems, involving measurements, modelling, and industry contracts. Carol chairs national and international groups developing standardised methods for radio propagation prediction, particularly in relation to the effective use of spectrum and the avoidance of interference between systems. She is also active in national consultative groups on spectrum usage and radio regulation.
